By Kidder Seven

Many people are interested in the causes of insomnia, as not getting enough sleep is a common and disturbing problem. Failing to get enough sleep makes it difficult to focus, to concentrate, and to be energetic. If you are driving or operating dangerous equipment of any kind, a lack of sleep can even be deadly. To help you identify what may be responsible for your insomnia, we'll be exploring some of the major causes in this article.

Frequent travel may sometimes cause insomnia. Jet lag is the common name for the disorientation you feel when you travel from one time zone to another. With so many people traveling long distances around the world this type of insomnia is becoming more common. However, you don't even have to travel to different time zones to experience problems sleeping. People who drive long distances for their professions or have no permanent residence while on the road also commonly have trouble sleeping. These practices go against the sense of routine that the human body likes so much. So any frequent changes in your sleeping environment can cause insomnia.

Many people have more trouble sleeping as they get older. Your body produced melatonin to help you sleep but as you get older your body makes less and less of this hormone. One common treatment for this, though controversial indeed, is to take supplements of melatonin. Older people are also more likely to be taking medications for various health problems, and these can sometimes interfere with sleep. There is some argument however, that sleep is needed less by those who are older than it is by younger people. Older people who are having trouble sleeping should ask their doctor's advice if they are having trouble sleeping.

Women have a whole host of potential causes of insomnia that are theirs alone. The list is quite extensive and just goes to show that there is a valid reason that women suffer from this condition more often than men. Most of the causes common to women are the result of natural causes but there are medications that can help in severe cases. Pregnancy is the one cause that will require careful monitoring by a physician. There are men and women alike who suffer with insomnia for reasons that aren't medical in nature but women would do well to rule out the potential causes that are based on Mother Nature before moving forward.

Sometimes, it's easy to figure out why you're suffering from insomnia but other times the reason isn't so clear cut. No matter what may be causing your sleeping difficulty, it's important to get to the bottom of it so you can start looking for a way to correct it. Sleeping well is an important component of good health, and it's something everyone can enjoy once they take care of what's getting in the way.
