Learn How You Can Stop Snoring

By Jason McDrarren

Do you hear your partner complain each night about your snoring? Perhaps your snoring is so loud that you wake yourself up each night? Many people suffer from snoring. Snoring makes it difficult for anyone in the house to get a good night of rest. Luckily, most of the causes of snoring are a result of our lifestyle choices and most of these can be easily changed. Take a minute to read on and discover why you snore and what you can do about it.

The first step is to learn what the cause of snoring is. Snoring is caused when our airways are blocked while we sleep. The opening in the back of our throat is constricted or compressed and this causes air to be forced through a small space. The vibrations caused by this can produce sometimes very loud snoring.

When many people sleep they experience snoring. This happens when the throat is compressed and breathing becomes difficult. This is sometimes a result of the muscles in the throat relaxing more than normal. This can cause the throat to collapse and the airway can become smaller than normal. For some, the problem is serious and sleep apnea can occur. Sleep apnea occurs when breathing actually stops temporarily. This may result in chocking and gasping for breath as the body begins to breath again. Snoring and sleep apnea affect how much oxygen makes it into our body and has a negative impact on our body's functioning.

Much snoring goes unnoticed. This is especially true for those that live alone and don't hear from their roommates about the snoring problem. If you find yourself waking up a lot at night or feeling extremely tired each morning, then you might be someone that snores. Snoring is caused by many different things. Common causes of snoring are: obesity, drinking, smoking, congestion, and swelling in the throat or nasal passage.

Snoring is often one of the many side-effects of being overweight. When a person is overweight they tend to have thicker skin around the neck. This can make it difficult for the neck muscles to keep the airway open at night, which results in snoring.

Luckily, a change in your living habits can solve most weight problems. Simply taking the time to exercise a little each day can result in a healthier weight. Many people are overweight because they don't exercise enough and they have a poor diet. But both of these things can easily be changed.

Other common causes are related to drinking and smoking. Smoking can cause inflammation in the throat and congestion. Alcohol often causes your throat muscles to relax too much, which causes the airway to become restricted. Both problems can be easily solved: stop smoking and don't drink as much, particularly before bed.

The position in which we sleep can also affect snoring. Generally sleeping on your back will increase the chance of snoring, particularly if weight is an issue. Try sleeping on the side or stomach instead.

Congestion is another common cause of snoring. This can be a result of allergies or even the common cold. Often relief can be had through the use of a humidifier. You can also try a hot bath or shower before bed.

Now you know some of the most common causes of snoring. Solving these problems can help you get a good nights sleep. Your family members will appreciate it too.

Although these remedies might not work for everyone, they will solve most snoring problems. If you think you snore for some other reason or if none of the above remedies work, then you might want to seek a medical professional.
