Are Self Tanning Products Safe?

By Yuri Szilasi

By now we're all aware of the harmful consequences of traditional tanning and also of tanning beds. That is the reason why so many people have once more started turning to self-tanning products which claim to give you that bronzed look you desire without any of the damaging side-effects. The most popular of these products is the spray tan. Spray tans permit you to get a natural looking tan than any other self-tanning product on the market. They provide a deep bronzed color, great coverage, and last for roughly a week. The main issue with these spray tans, is that they are not be as safe as you may think.

To achieve that deep bronzed look that you want, spray tanners utilize a chemical called dihydroxyacetone sometimes referred to as DHA. This chemical has been utilized in topical tanning products for years without any big problems. It was even accepted by the FDA for this topical purpose. So what's the issue?

The issue here is that this poisonous chemical isn't just being applied topically, it is being made airborne. Thanks to the nature of the way this chemical is being introduced to your skin, you are at serious risk for breathing DHA during the spray tan process. While the risks of ingesting or breathing in DHA are still not entirely known, many individuals have complained of rashes, coughing, dizziness and fainting after being exposed to this chemical.

DHA is not the only thing you have to be anxious about when getting a spray tan. The airbrushing solution which is used to attain that instant tan, contains more than 45 different chemicals. These chemicals include things such as arsenic, lead and mercury. I don't know how you feel about it, but I don't want to be sprayed down with arsenic. Personally I'm against putting any poisons on my skin as some can be soaked up direct and don't have to be breathed or swallowed to enter your blood.

To date there are still no laws which regulate suntan salons, which suggests that many clients are not being warned about the FDA's recommendations to avoid the inhalation of DHA as well as many of these other chemicals. If you are looking for a way of attaining an immediate cosmetic change, try an instant facelift but stay away from instant tans.
