Simple Ways to Enjoy Much Better Health

By Dr Graeme Teague

There are steps that you can take to get you in the direction of your goals if they are to feel better, lose weight and improve your health. Even though it may seem like there's lots of conflicting information about health out there, most experts agree on a few essential points, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. There are some important ways for you to look and feel your best which we are going to look at more.

Stress is perhaps the most important issue to overcome if you want to have better health. Research shows that stress has a detrimental effect on both your emotional as well as your physical health. It's hard to feel your best each day if you are tense and stressed all the time. There are many ways to deal with stress, but the first step is to acknowledge that it's a problem for you.A professional can help you if your stress levels are super high. There are many self help techniques like finding inspirational literature, self hypnosis and even deep breathing exercises that can help you deal with your stress. Remember, stress can be a killer, it isn't just annoying or irritating.

One health tip that's considered to be very good and everyone can do is drink plenty of water. The good thing about this is that it's not expensive to do and it's immensely simple. There is one problem with it though: not enough people do it, for some reason. To make sure you're drinking enough water, you should carry a water supply with you as much as possible, whether you're driving somewhere, at the gym or at work. Substituting your unhealthy cold drinks, like soda, for something like pure water is a good thing to do. If you don't know how good the water is in your home you should just get a filter.

Part of good health is keeping your brain as active as possible. Research proves that elderly people who remain mentally active are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's and other age related issues. Even if you aren't old enough to be worried about getting older yet, it's still good to use your brain as much as you can each day. You can help yourself by thinking of it as a lifelong pursuit like taking classes on subjects you want to learn about reading books and doing research into your favorite topics through the internet. Using your brain helps you feel young and keeps you interested in life. Another great way to exercise your brain is to do things a bit differently when you are able to do so, like taking a different route to work, using you non-dominant hand for writing or even teaching yourself a totally new skill--no matter what your age might be.

While it is obviously better to eat foods that are healthy instead of foods that are unhealthy, when it comes to improving your health and dropping pounds, the amount of food that you eat is just as important as the type of food you eat. Cutting down on your portion size accomplishes two things: it reduces your caloric intake and reduces any harmful effects that the unhealthy foods you eat could be having on your system. Obviously you don't need to worry about eating too much salad or too many fresh veggies but those are not foods that we normally eat too much of anyway. It's carbohydrates like bread and pasta, sweets and salty foods that are the worst culprits, as it's always tempting to reach for another portion. Learn how to be satisfied with moderate portions and resist the urge to eat more. Healthy living is not really all that mysterious, as we've seen with the simple tips shared above. It's essential to realize that every small change you can make in the right direction brings you one step closer to your long term goals. Developing good and healthy habits now is like investing in your own future which, thanks to these habits, will hopefully be healthy and long.
