Great Ideas On How Diabetics Can Relieve Stress

By Robbie Bainer

Learning to deal with diabetes is stressful both for the person that has been diagnosed, as well as the immediate family, and everyone knows that stress is not good for our health. These days it is almost impossible to avoid stress with our hectic lifestyles, therefore it is important to find ways to relieve stress and help our bodies relax more. Here are some ideas on how a person with diabetes can deal with stress.

* Exercise regularly - One of the best ways to relieve your stress is to exercise regularly. When you exercise, your body releases feel-good hormones and the more you exercise, the better you feel. Try to exercise for at least thirty minutes a day for the best results.

* Enjoy time with friends - Take the time to get out and enjoy some time with great friends. Hangout, visit, maybe grab dinner and a movie. Being around other people and having fun will definitely take your mind off any problems you are dealing with and you will go home feeling refreshed and relaxed.

* Quiet time - It is very important that you set aside some quiet time in your busy schedule to look after yourself and be on your own. Perhaps you can relax and read a good book or listen to some nice music. Just take some time to unwind and enjoy yourself.

* Try meditating - Meditation is quite beneficial but it does take practice. The benefits are that it helps to completely clear your mind of any worry. Practice meditating at least 10 minutes each day. Find a quiet space in your home where you can sit comfortably without any distractions. Close your eyes and breathe regularly as you clear your mind of all thoughts. Do not focus on any new thoughts. Just let them drift away. Each day you will get better at this and you will find that it actually does help to release any tension in your body and wash away any stress.

* Deal with negative thoughts and feelings - For the times when something really upsets you it is important that you have a plan on how to deal with that so that you can release the negative feelings and move on in a positive way. Perhaps you have a close friend that you can turn to when you need to talk things out. If that doesn't work for you, how about keeping a journal where you can privately write out your feelings and emotions? This is a great way to get things off of your mind so that they do not continue to create more stress and more health issues.

* Find fun things to do - The more overwhelmed you feel with your daily routine, the more likely you are to feel stressed out. A great way to deal with this is to find something new and exciting to do such as learning how to ski, playing tennis, taking cooking lessons, etc. The more you focus on learning something new, the less time you will have to worry about things.

When a person is first diagnosed with diabetes they will most likely feel very stressed out. They may also worry that they can no longer participate in the many activities that they previously enjoyed, like soccer, baseball, football, biking, etc. What they need to understand is that all those activities are very important in maintaining a stress free, healthy lifestyle, and that with a little pre-planning around their diet, they can still enjoy all those activities and more.
